Restoring Livelihoods: Veterinary Clinics Revitalization Boosts Food Security in Rural Hasaka

Hasaka, Syria – In northeastern Syria, where livestock is vital to survival, a groundbreaking initiative is helping communities rebuild. The Veterinary Clinics Rehabilitation and Enhancing Livelihoods, Livestock, and Food Security in Rural Hasaka project is restoring veterinary services, empowering local breeders—especially women—and strengthening food security.

Challenges in the Livestock Sector in Shadadi, Rural Hasaka, Northeast Syria

In Shaddadi, home to 16,000 people and 260,000 sheep, years of conflict have led to infrastructure destruction, economic instability, and a lack of veterinary care. Herders struggle with fodder shortages, medical access, and market disruptions, while female veterinarians remain severely underrepresented. Women-led households, in particular, face financial hardships, forcing many into early marriage or labor-intensive work.

A Holistic Solution

DOZ Organization is tackling these issues through a two-pronged approach:

  1. Veterinary Services Enhancement and Clinics Rehabilitation
  2. Capacity Building for Veterinary Staff
  3. Capacity Building for Livestock breeders and farmers
  4. Women’s Empowerment & Economic Support

Impact & Future Prospects

The project will provide essential veterinary care to 7,552 people in Adla and Hariri, indirectly benefiting 22,000 others in surrounding areas. By restoring veterinary services, promoting gender inclusion, and strengthening food security, DOZ Organization is not just aiding livestock—it is fostering long-term resilience and economic stability for rural Syrian communities.
